How osteopathy can help your child

Osteopathy for Newborns and Infants

Birth is one of the most stressful experiences that a person goes through. During this time, the soft bones of the baby’s skull overlap and shift as the uterus squeezes the baby through the birth canal. This process is called moulding. If everything goes well, the body’s natural healing mechanism works to shift the bones back during the early days of infancy, through feeding and crying.

In some cases, moulding may not resolve naturally, especially if there were complications during labour. If there is retention in the bone’s shift, it can play a factor in bodily functions. During a Caesarian delivery, even though the baby does not go through the birth canal, the contractions experienced prior to the birth can still lead to changes in moulding. An Osteopathic Manual Practitioner can help enable and promote the realignment of skull bones to optimize early development.

At AOTS, Osteopathy is used to treat the following conditions in newborns and infants:

  • Reflux

  • Vomiting

  • Feeding

  • Bowel movement

  • Colic

  • Sleep

  • Irritability

  • Ear infections

  • Misshapen skull

  • Milestone development

Osteopathy for Older Children

The body is always moving toward health and wellbeing. This drive is especially strong in children, and they tend to respond more quickly to osteopathic treatment. Osteopathy in older children is beneficial as their bodies are constantly changing and going through growth spurts. Osteopathic treatment helps to realign the body during development and following falls or injuries.

Injuries that happen in childhood can have an impact later on in the child’s life, since the body may compensate or adapt to the injury to avoid pain or function more efficiently. This can cause misalignment in the body which can impact posture, range of motion, flexibility, balance, coordination, and difficulties with concentration, behaviour, and learning.

Osteopathic Manual Practitioners are trained to notice strains and misalignment in the body and can help to realign and resolve strain before it has a more severe impact on the child. Regular Osteopathy check ups will enable good overall health in the child and can prevent further problems down the road.
